Shampoo for Itchy Skin and Dandruff
Itching and flakes come from dry skin, fleas, allergies or a yeast problem. A good shampoo calms the skin and clears flakes, but it can't cure an allergy or an infection.
First, rule out fleas. Part the fur at the base of the tail. Black specks that turn reddish on wet tissue are flea dirt; start with the anti tick shampoo instead.
Itchy dog shampoo
For a dog that keeps scratching, licking or chewing its skin, choose an itchy dog shampoo with an active ingredient. Pinox combines piroctone olamine 0.5% with ceramides and is made for allergic and itchy skin. Massage it in gently, follow the contact time and how often to use it on the pack, and rinse well. For skin that's sensitive but not itchy, stay with Neem & Aloe Vera. If the itching keeps coming back, see our dog skin care range.
Dog dandruff shampoo
White flakes usually mean dry skin or too much yeast. Pinox is our pick here too: piroctone olamine is a widely used anti-dandruff ingredient. Bathe once a week, brush in between, and in the monsoon dry the coat fully, because damp fur is where flakes start.
See a vet if you notice raw patches, open sores, round bald spots, a bad smell from the skin, or itching that hasn't eased after 2 weeks.
Dog Hair Fall Shampoo
Some hair fall is normal: most dogs shed all year, and double-coated breeds like Labradors, German Shepherds and Huskies shed heavily twice a year. No dog hair fall shampoo can stop normal shedding, but the right routine stops hair breaking from dryness and tangles.
- Match the shampoo to the coat. Long Coat Shampoo for fur that tangles, Short Coat Shampoo for fur that lies flat.
- Condition long, double or dry coats after every bath, so loose hair brushes out without pulling.
- Brush 3 to 4 times a week. It's the best shed control there is.
- Feed omega fatty acids for skin and coat, such as Fur Radiance Omega 3-6-9 from our dog supplements range. If itching is behind the hair fall, use Pinox.
Bald patches, sores, red skin or hair loss with constant scratching isn't shedding. That needs a vet, not a new shampoo.
Anti Tick Shampoo for Dogs
An anti tick shampoo kills or washes off the ticks and fleas on your dog during the bath, but it doesn't keep new ones away for weeks. Use it to clear the ticks you can see, then protect your dog with a 12-week tick tablet or a spot on for dogs.
- A few ticks now and then: Anti Tick Puppy-safe Shampoo (₹279, 300 ml). A gentle neem and aloe vera wash that helps wash away ticks and fleas and soothes itchy skin. Suitable for puppies and kittens.
- Ticks every day, or back within a week: Fipronil 0.5% Tick & Flea Shampoo (₹299, 200 ml). A fipronil wash for dogs and cats. Ask your vet about a tick tablet or spot-on as well.
Lather from the ears and neck down to the toes, where ticks gather, leave it on for about 5 minutes (or as the pack says), then comb out dead ticks and rinse. Most spot-ons in India also contain fipronil, so keep 48 hours between the Fipronil shampoo and a fipronil spot-on.
Puppy Shampoo
A puppy shampoo has to be mild, because a puppy's skin is thinner than an adult dog's. Three Richpet shampoos suit puppies: Neem & Aloe Vera for everyday baths, Long Coat for long-haired breeds, and Anti Tick Puppy-safe for tick season. For most puppies, start with Neem & Aloe Vera.
First bath at about 8 weeks; before that, wipe dirty spots with a warm, damp cloth.
- Use lukewarm water, and keep shampoo out of the eyes and ears.
- Dry fully with a towel, then a dryer on the coolest setting.
- Bathe every 3 to 4 weeks, unless your puppy gets properly dirty.
Dog Shampoo by Breed
Our rule: if the fur tangles or mats, use Long Coat Shampoo; if it lies flat, use Short Coat Shampoo. Beagles, Pugs and Indies do well on Short Coat.
Shampoo for Shih Tzu
The best shampoo for Shih Tzu is a detangling one: Long Coat Shampoo every 2 to 3 weeks, Coat Conditioner after, and a daily brush. For a Shih Tzu puppy, start with Neem & Aloe Vera and move to Long Coat as the adult coat grows in. Don't bathe more often than that; brush and wipe the face in between.
Shampoo for Golden Retrievers
Long Coat Shampoo every 4 to 6 weeks, then Coat Conditioner for the feathering. Goldens love water, so dry the thick undercoat fully, especially in the monsoon, or damp fur leads to itchy patches.
Shampoo for German Shepherds
Their medium-length double coat sheds heavily, so bathe only every 6 to 8 weeks: Short Coat Shampoo for most, Long Coat for long-haired German Shepherds, then Coat Conditioner. In shedding season, brush daily rather than bathing more.
Shampoo for Labradors
Short Coat Shampoo every 4 to 6 weeks removes the doggy smell from a Lab's oily coat. Dry the ears well after a swim. If your Lab still smells and scratches a day after a bath, it's likely a skin problem: switch to Pinox, and see a vet if it doesn't settle in 2 weeks.
Shampoo for Pomeranians
Long Coat Shampoo every 3 to 4 weeks with Coat Conditioner keeps the fluffy coat from tangling behind the ears and on the tail. Dry it fully with a blower.
Shampoo for Huskies
A Husky's dense double coat stays fairly clean, so a bath every 2 to 3 months is enough: Short Coat Shampoo, Coat Conditioner, and a full dry down to the undercoat.
Dog Shampoo for Skin Problems
Some shampoos have an active ingredient that targets a skin or parasite problem, not just dirt. Richpet makes two: Pinox (₹399), with piroctone olamine 0.5% and ceramides for itchy, allergic and flaky skin, and the Fipronil 0.5% Tick & Flea Shampoo (₹299) for ticks and fleas.
Follow the contact time and how often to use it on the pack, don't use these daily, and don't combine two of them at once. For a skin infection, wounds or spreading bald patches, your vet decides the treatment; the shampoo supports it.
Dog Conditioner: Does Your Dog Need One?
Yes, if your dog has a long, double or dry coat. A dog conditioner puts back the moisture a shampoo washes out, makes brushing easier and adds shine. Short, healthy coats can skip it.
Richpet Coat Conditioner (500 ml, ₹499) uses coconut milk and shea butter to soften the coat and add shine, and it's made to calm itchy skin. After rinsing out the shampoo, work it through the coat, leave it on as the pack says, and rinse. Skip human conditioner: it's made for more acidic skin and can dry out a dog's.
How to Bathe Your Dog at Home
- Brush first; mats tighten when wet.
- Wet the coat to the skin with lukewarm water.
- Lather a coin-sized amount of shampoo from neck to tail, and do the face with a damp cloth.
- Leave it on for 2 to 3 minutes, or as the label says for tick shampoos and Pinox.
- Rinse until the water runs clear; leftover shampoo causes itching.
- Condition long, double or dry coats.
- Dry fully, down to the undercoat.
How often: most dogs every 3 to 4 weeks, short coats every 4 to 6, Huskies every 2 to 3 months, and dogs on Pinox or a tick shampoo as the label or vet says. In the monsoon, wipe muddy paws between baths rather than bathing more, and always dry fully.

FAQs
What is the best dog shampoo in India?
There's no single best one; it's the one made for your dog's coat and skin. For regular baths, a mild, paraben-free shampoo like Neem & Aloe Vera suits most healthy dogs. Pinox suits itchy or flaky skin, and Long or Short Coat handles coat care.
What is the best anti-allergy shampoo for dogs?
A shampoo can't cure an allergy, but it washes pollen, dust and other allergens off the coat and calms the skin. Pinox, with piroctone olamine and ceramides, is made for allergic and itchy skin. If your dog itches all year, see a vet to find the cause.
What is a good shampoo for dog skin problems?
Pinox (piroctone olamine 0.5% with ceramides) for itchy, allergic or flaky skin, and our Fipronil 0.5% shampoo for ticks and fleas. For a fungal infection, sores or spreading bald patches, see a vet first; the shampoo then supports the treatment.
Can I use human shampoo on my dog?
No. Human shampoo is made for skin with a pH of about 5.5, while a dog's skin sits closer to neutral, at roughly 6.5 to 7.5. It strips a dog's natural oils and can leave the skin dry and itchy. Always use a shampoo made for dogs.
Which human soap is best for dogs?
None. Bath soap is too harsh for a dog's skin and dries it out. If you're using soap today, switch to a mild shampoo like Neem & Aloe Vera and you'll see less scratching after baths.
Which dog shampoo leaves the best smell?
The freshest-smelling dog is one that's clean and fully dry, since damp fur is what smells. Neem & Aloe Vera and Short Coat Shampoo are both made to remove odour.
Can I use these shampoos on my cat?
Six of our seven products are labelled for dogs and cats. Long Coat Shampoo is made for dogs only.
What should I do if my dog reacts to a shampoo?
Rinse the coat well with plain water and stop using it. Redness, swelling or heavy scratching after a bath should settle within a day. If it doesn't, or your dog seems unwell, call your vet.
