Description
What Is Spot On for Dogs Used For?
A spot-on is a spot on dog tick treatment and a spot on dog flea treatment in one tube. You apply it once and it keeps working until the next dose is due.
- Kills ticks already on your dog, including the brown dog tick, the most common tick on Indian dogs.
- Kills fleas, and Fipronil Spot-On also stops flea eggs and larvae from developing.
- Keeps protecting: 30 days with Fipronil Spot-On, and up to 4 months against ticks with FurTick Spot-On.
- Fipronil Spot-On also controls lice.
A spot-on does not treat worms or skin infections, and it does not clean ticks out of your home. For a heavy infestation, bathe your dog first, then apply the spot-on 48 hours later.
How Tick Drops for Dogs Work
The two kinds of anti tick drops for dogs work in different ways:
- Fipronil spreads across the skin through its natural oils over the first day or two. It sits in the top layer of skin and the hair roots, so ticks and fleas die when they touch or bite your dog.
- Fluralaner (FurTick Spot-On) is absorbed through the skin and works from inside. Ticks and fleas die soon after they start feeding.
Either way, a spot on for ticks protects the whole body, not just the patch where you put it. It kills ticks rather than repelling them, so you may still see the odd tick for a day or two. It will usually be dying or dead.
Spot On for Dogs by Weight
Every tick spot on for dogs is dosed by weight, so weigh your dog before you buy. Most people guess low. Pick the band your dog falls in today, and never split one tube between two dogs.
Spot on for dogs up to 10 kg
For Shih Tzus, Pugs, Lhasa Apsos, Dachshunds and growing puppies. Choose Fipronil Spot-On (up to 10 kg) from 8 weeks and at least 2 kg, or FurTick Spot-On (4.5 to 10 kg) once your dog weighs at least 4.5 kg.
Spot on for dogs over 10 to 20 kg
For Beagles, Cocker Spaniels, Indies and most medium dogs. Both Fipronil Spot-On (10 to 20 kg) and FurTick Spot-On (10 to 20 kg) come in this size.
Spot on for dogs over 20 to 40 kg
For Labradors, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, Boxers and Huskies. Both Fipronil Spot-On (20 to 40 kg) and FurTick Spot-On (20 to 40 kg) come in this size.
Spot on for dogs over 40 to 60 kg
For Great Danes, Saint Bernards, Mastiffs and large Rottweilers. Choose Fipronil Spot-On (40 to 60 kg). Weigh giant breeds every few months, since many cross 40 kg before they're two.

Best Spot On for Dogs in India
The best spot on treatment for dogs is the one in the right size that you apply on time. In India, most spot-ons use one of two ingredients, and Richpet makes one of each.
Fipronil spot on: monthly tick and flea control
Fipronil has been used on dogs for more than 25 years. It has the lowest price per tube, comes in every size from 0 to 60 kg, and you apply it every 30 days. Choose it for dogs over 40 kg, for puppies under 4.5 kg, or if you want the lowest price per tube.
Fluralaner spot on: up to 4 months of tick protection
Fluralaner is the same ingredient as in FurTick chews. One tube protects against ticks for up to 4 months and against fleas for up to 6 months, so you need only 3 a year, and there are fewer dates to forget during the monsoon tick season. It comes for dogs from 4.5 to 40 kg.
| Fipronil Spot-On | FurTick Spot-On (fluralaner) | |
|---|---|---|
| One tube lasts | 30 days | Up to 4 months for ticks, 6 months for fleas |
| Tubes a year | 12 | 3 |
| Sizes | 0-10, 10-20, 20-40, 40-60 kg | 4.5-10, 10-20, 20-40 kg |
| Kills | Ticks, fleas, lice | Ticks, fleas |
| Cost per year, 15 kg dog | about ₹2,990 | about ₹1,650 |
| Best for | Dogs over 40 kg, young puppies, lowest price per tube | Busy homes, outdoor dogs, monsoon |
Our pick: for a dog between 4.5 and 40 kg that goes outdoors a lot, FurTick Spot-On, because one missed month is all ticks need. For dogs over 40 kg, puppies under 4.5 kg, or when the price per tube matters most, Fipronil Spot-On. Both are among the best tick spot on for dogs you can buy, as long as you keep to the schedule.
How to Apply Spot On on Dogs
- Check the size. The weight band on the pack must match your dog's weight today.
- Start with a dry dog. Don't bathe for 48 hours before.
- Open the tube. Hold it upright and snap or cut the tip.
- Find the skin. Part the fur at the base of the neck, between the shoulder blades, until you can see skin. Your dog can't lick this spot.
- Squeeze it all out on the skin. Empty the whole tube. For big dogs, if the pack says to use 2 or 3 spots down the back, follow the pack.
- Don't rub it in. Keep children and other pets from touching the spot until it's dry.
- Wash your hands and set a reminder for the next dose.
The most common mistake when learning how to apply spot on treatment for dogs is putting it on the fur, not the skin. The liquid stays on the hair, and your dog isn't protected.
Use It Safely
- Match the size. Too little won't protect; too much can upset your dog. Never split one tube between dogs.
- Never use a dog spot-on on a cat. Cats need a formula and dose made for them.
- Only on healthy skin. Skip broken, sore or irritated patches.
- No bath or swim for 48 hours after applying.
- Pregnant, nursing, sick or very old dogs: ask your vet first.
- If your dog licks it, drooling is common and passes. If vomiting goes on or your dog seems unwell, call a vet.
- Store it in a cool, dry place, away from children and food.
Spot On for Puppies
A spot on for puppies has to match both age and weight. Check both on the pack before the first dose.
- Fipronil Spot-On: from 8 weeks and at least 2 kg, in the up-to-10 kg size.
- FurTick Spot-On: once your puppy weighs at least 4.5 kg.
If your puppy is too young or too small, comb out ticks and fleas, bathe with a puppy-safe anti-tick shampoo, and wash the bedding. Ask your vet when to start a spot on treatment for puppies.
Spot On or Tablet: Which Suits Your Dog?
Both kill ticks and fleas. The right one depends on your dog and your home.
| Choose a spot-on if your dog | Choose a chew if your dog |
|---|---|
| Won't eat tablets, even in food | Swims or gets bathed every week |
| Has a sensitive stomach | Has a long or very thick coat |
| Lives mostly indoors | Lives with small children who hug it a lot |
| Is a puppy too small for a chew | Is over 40 kg and you want 12 weeks per dose |
A spot-on is a tick liquid for dogs that goes on the skin; a chew works from inside after one meal. If a chew sounds better, see our tick tablets for dogs.

Spot On for Dogs: FAQs
Is spot-on good for dogs?
Yes, for most dogs. It kills ticks and fleas and keeps protecting for weeks, with no tablet to give. Pick the right weight size, put it on the skin, and stay on schedule. For pregnant, nursing, sick or very old dogs, ask your vet first.
Can I use spot-on on my dog?
Yes, if your dog is over the minimum age and weight on the pack and the skin where you apply it is healthy. Fipronil Spot-On starts from 8 weeks and 2 kg; FurTick Spot-On from 4.5 kg. Use the band that matches your dog's weight today.
Where to apply spot-on on dogs?
On the skin at the base of the neck, between the shoulder blades, where your dog can't lick. Part the fur until you see skin, then squeeze the tube there.
How long does dog spot-on take to work?
With Fipronil Spot-On, fleas die within 12 to 18 hours and ticks within 24 to 48 hours. Fleas usually die first. Ticks already attached can take up to 48 hours to die and drop off, so you may see a few in the first two days.
How long does spot on last?
Fipronil Spot-On protects for 30 days, so apply it once a month. FurTick Spot-On protects against ticks for up to 4 months and fleas for up to 6 months. Don't wait for ticks to come back before the next dose. Set a phone reminder on the day you apply it.
Does spot on kill ticks or only prevent them?
It kills them. A spot on for dogs ticks doesn't stop every tick from climbing on, but ticks that bite or touch treated skin die. That's why you may still spot the odd tick, usually dead or dying. Keep checking after walks.
How do anti tick drops work?
Fipronil spreads across the skin through its natural oils, so ticks and fleas die on contact. Fluralaner soaks in through the skin and works from inside, so they die once they start feeding. Both anti tick and flea drops for dogs protect the whole body, not just the spot.
What are the side effects of spot on in dogs?
Most dogs have none. Some get mild redness, itching or a greasy patch where it went on, which settles in a day or two. Licking it can cause drooling. If you see shaking, weakness or a swollen face, wash the spot with mild soap and call a vet.
Can I bathe or touch my dog after spot on?
Wait 48 hours before a bath or swim. You can stroke your dog once the spot is dry, but keep hands off the exact spot for a day. Keep children from hugging your dog, and keep it off your bed, until the spot is dry.
Spot on or tablet: which is better for my dog?
Neither is better for every dog. A spot-on suits dogs that won't eat tablets or have a sensitive stomach. A chew suits dogs that swim, get bathed often or have thick coats. Both kill ticks and fleas; see the table above.
Why do I still see ticks after applying spot-on?
In the first two days, that's normal. After that, check three things: the size matched your dog's weight, it went on skin and not fur, and there was no bath within 48 hours. Ticks also hide in bedding and kennels, so clean those.
Can I use a spot-on with a tick shampoo or spray?
Yes, with a gap. Bathe with an anti-tick shampoo first, then apply the spot-on 48 hours later. Don't use two spot-ons together, or a spot-on and a chew together, unless your vet says so.
Can I use a dog spot-on on my cat?
No. Dog spot-ons are made and dosed for dogs and can harm cats. Use a cat-only product from our cat flea and tick range, and keep cats away from a treated dog until the spot is dry.
