Dog Skin Care and Itch Treatment
Is your dog scratching all day, licking its paws or losing hair in patches? Itching is a sign, not the problem itself. It can come from allergies, ticks, dry...
Description
Dog Itching Treatment: Start With the Symptom
| What you see | Likely cause | What helps | Richpet pick |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scratching all over, licking paws, red belly or armpits | Skin allergy | Anti-itch tablets on your vet's advice, plus a gentle bath | Oclamed tablets |
| Ticks or fleas, scratching near the tail and ears | Parasites | Treat the ticks first. The itch settles once they are gone | Tick and flea treatment |
| Flaky skin, dandruff, greasy or itchy coat | Dry or irritated skin | A shampoo for itchy, sensitive skin | Pinox Shampoo |
| Red, moist or smelly patches, skin folds | Bacteria and moisture build-up | Keep it clean and dry. See a vet if it spreads | Bactraguard Skin Spray |
| Dull, dry coat, light shedding | Dry skin, low omega in food | Omega 3-6-9 oil with meals | Fur Radiance |
| Round bald patches, scabs, crusts | Fungus or mites | Vet check first | See your vet |
Most itchy dogs have more than one cause at once, for example an allergy plus ticks. Fix the cause you can see first, then the next.

Dog Itching Tablets: Oclamed
Oclamed contains oclacitinib, an anti-itch tablet for allergy-related itching in dogs. It works on the itch signal itself, so it is not an antihistamine or a steroid.
Oclamed is a prescription tablet. Give it only as your vet advises. Your vet sets the dose and how long to give it, and checks that it suits your dog's age. Pick the strength by weight:
- 5.4 mg for dogs up to 11 kg, ₹999
- 16 mg for dogs from 11 to 30 kg, ₹2,199
Oclamed calms the itch. It does not clear ticks, fungus or a bacterial infection, so treat those causes too.
Dog Skin Allergy Treatment
A skin allergy is the most common reason a dog itches without ticks or fleas. Dogs react to dust mites, pollen, grass, some foods and flea bites. You see red skin on the belly, armpits and paws, licking, chewing and ear scratching. It often gets worse in certain seasons.
What helps:
- Calm the itch. Your vet can prescribe an anti-itch tablet such as Oclamed.
- Wash the allergens off. A bath every 7 to 10 days with Pinox Shampoo helps sensitive skin.
- Feed the skin. Fur Radiance adds omega 3, 6 and 9 to support the skin barrier.
- Keep ticks and fleas away. One flea bite can set off days of itching in an allergic dog.
If the itching started after a food change, ask your vet about a food trial. Allergies are managed, not cured, so most dogs need care through the year.
Dog Skin Infection Treatment
Red, moist, smelly skin, pimples or pus need a vet. Bacterial and fungal infections look alike and need different treatment, so a diagnosis comes first. Many infections start because the dog scratched an itch and broke the skin.
While you wait for the vet, or alongside their treatment:
- Keep the area clean and dry. Trim long hair around it.
- Use Bactraguard Antibacterial Skin Spray to cleanse the skin and control odour.
- Bathe with Pinox Shampoo, then dry fully, especially in skin folds.
- Stop the licking. A cone helps if the dog keeps reopening the spot.
In the monsoon, damp coats and humid air make skin infections more common. Dry your dog well after every walk in the rain.
Dog Hair Fall Treatment
Some shedding is normal. Most dogs shed more in spring and before summer. Hair fall is a problem when you see bald patches, thinning on the back or tail, scabs, or hair loss with itching.
| Hair fall pattern | Common cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Even shedding all over, coat looks healthy | Seasonal shedding | Brush daily. See our hair fall shampoos |
| Dull coat, dry skin, shedding | Diet low in omega fatty acids | Fur Radiance with meals for at least a month |
| Hair loss near the tail, with scratching | Fleas or ticks | Tick and flea treatment |
| Hair loss with itching and red skin | Skin allergy | See the allergy section above |
| Round bald patches, crusts | Fungus or mites | Vet check |
A new coat takes 4 to 8 weeks to grow, so give any dog hair fall treatment at least a month. For daily nutrition support, see our dog multivitamins.
Dog Skin Care at Home
- Bath every 2 to 4 weeks for healthy skin, or every 7 to 10 days for itchy skin. Rinse well, as leftover shampoo itches.
- Dry fully. Skin folds, armpits and between the toes stay damp and smell.
- Brush often. It spreads natural oils and shows ticks early.
- Check for ticks after every walk, especially in the monsoon.
- Never use human products. Human shampoo, soap and creams upset a dog's skin.
- Feed well. Home-cooked food is often low in omega fats. An omega oil fills that gap.
When to See a Vet
Go to a vet within a day or two if your dog:
- Has open sores, pus or a bad smell from the skin
- Has round bald patches or crusts
- Scratches so much it cannot sleep
- Has a swollen face or hives
- Still itches after one week of home care
Street dogs and Indies need the same checks. Mange spreads fast between dogs.

Dog Skin Care and Itch Treatment: FAQs
How can I get my dog to stop itching?
Find the cause first. Check for ticks and fleas, then look at where it itches. Allergy itching on the belly and paws needs an anti-itch tablet from your vet, a gentle bath and omega oil.
What can I give my dog orally for itchy skin?
Your vet can prescribe an anti-itch tablet such as Oclamed (oclacitinib) for allergy-related itching. An omega 3-6-9 oil with food supports the skin over time.
Can I give my dog a human allergy tablet?
Not without your vet. Some human allergy tablets are unsafe for dogs, and the dose for a dog is different. Many also contain added ingredients that are harmful to dogs.
Do I need a prescription for Oclamed?
Yes. Oclamed is a prescription tablet and should be given only as your vet advises.
Should I bathe my dog if it is itching?
Yes, with a gentle shampoo for itchy skin, every 7 to 10 days. Rinse well and dry fully. Bathing too often dries the skin and makes itching worse.
How quickly will my dog's skin improve?
Allergy itch often eases within days on anti-itch tablets. Dry skin and coat take 4 to 8 weeks with omega oil. See your vet if nothing changes in a week.
Why is my dog itching and losing hair?
The usual causes are fleas, ticks, a skin allergy, fungus or mites. Itching with patchy hair loss needs a vet check to find which one.
Is coconut oil good for my dog's skin?
A little on dry paws is fine, but it does not treat itching or infection, and dogs lick it off. An omega oil given with food works on the skin from inside.
Does dog itching get worse in the monsoon?
Yes. Damp coats, humid air and more ticks mean more itching and skin infections. Dry your dog after every walk and check for ticks daily.
Can I use these products on cats?
Bactraguard, Pinox, Neem & Aloe Vera Shampoo and Fur Radiance are made for dogs and cats. Oclamed is for dogs only.
