How to Avoid Ticks on Dogs: A Year-Round Plan for Indian Homes

7 min read
TL;DR

To avoid ticks on dogs, keep your dog on one long-lasting tick product all year and never miss a dose. Check your dog every day, especially the ears, toes and neck, avoid spots where other dogs rest, wash your dog's bedding often, and treat every pet in the house at the same time.

Most of us take ticks seriously during the monsoon. We give the tablet or put on the spot-on, check the dog every evening, and breathe easy once the rains end. Then sometime in March, the ticks are back, and it feels like starting from zero.

The truth is, ticks in India never really go away. They just get quieter for a few months. The good news is that avoiding ticks doesn't take much effort. It takes a simple routine you follow all year, not just when you start seeing them.

Here's that routine, step by step.

Do dogs in India need tick protection all year?

Ticks on dogs by season in India

Yes. Tropical vet guidelines recommend that dogs in the tropics are protected from ticks throughout the year, and Indian data shows why.

In one Chennai study of dogs with ticks, about 65% of cases were seen during the two monsoons and about 24% in summer. But winter still had around 12%. Ticks slow down, they don't disappear. India's main dog tick, the brown dog tick, also lives indoors, so it doesn't care much about the weather outside.

Stopping protection in winter gives ticks an easy way back. By the time you see them again, they've already laid eggs in your home.

Step 1: Choose one main tick product and stick to its schedule

This is the most important step. Pick one product that gives long-lasting protection and give it on time, every time.

Option How often Best for Watch out for
Tick tablet (chew) Every 12 weeks Dogs that get bathed often, active dogs, busy owners Ticks must bite to be killed, so you may still see a few that die soon after
Spot-on Every month Dogs that are bathed less often Apply on the skin, not the fur. Baths wash some of it away
Anti-tick spray As per label, often weekly Topping up the paws and legs, quick coverage Not a replacement for a main product
Anti-tick shampoo During baths Washing off ticks on bath day Almost no protection once rinsed off

A tick tablet like Furtick or a monthly spot-on for dogs is your main shield. Sprays and shampoos are helpers. You can compare every option on our tick prevention for dogs page.

Why the schedule matters so much: ehrlichia, a main cause of tick fever, can pass to your dog within about 3 hours of a tick attaching. A dose that's two weeks late isn't a small slip. It's two weeks with the door open.

Make it hard to forget:

  • Set a repeating phone reminder the day you give the dose.
  • Write the next due date on the pack with a marker.
  • Tie it to something you never miss, like the first of the month or your dog's monthly grooming.

Bathe your dog often? Read this

Many Indian dogs get bathed every week, especially in summer. That's great for their coat, but it affects some tick products.

A 2020 study found that regular bathing shortened how long a fipronil spot-on kept working. So a "monthly" spot-on may not last the full month on a dog that's bathed often.

What to do:

  • If you bathe weekly, a tick tablet usually makes more sense. It works from the inside, so baths don't wash it off.
  • If you use a spot-on, apply it on clean, fully dry skin, and don't bathe your dog for 2 days before or after.
  • Never apply a spot-on on wet fur or right after a bath.

Step 2: Check your dog every day

Where to check your dog for ticks every day

No product is 100% effective, so a daily check is your safety net. It takes two minutes. Do it in the evening after the last walk, with good light.

Run your fingers slowly against the coat and check these spots:

  • Inside and behind the ears
  • Around the eyes
  • Under the collar and along the neck
  • Armpits and between the back legs
  • Between the toes
  • Under the tail

The brown dog tick likes the head and ears most, then the spaces between the toes, the back, the groin and the armpits. If you find one, take it off properly. Here's our guide on how to remove a tick from a dog.

Step 3: Be careful where your dog goes

Places where ticks spread between dogs

In India, ticks don't come from forests as much as from other dogs. The brown dog tick spreads wherever dogs gather and rest.

  • On walks, avoid the spots where street dogs sleep: under parked cars, building gates, stairwells and shady corners of the compound.
  • At the groomer, boarding or daycare, ask how they control ticks. Check your dog the same day you bring them home.
  • In parks, keep your dog moving rather than lying in the same patch of grass that many dogs use.
  • After travel, do a full check. Dogs often pick up ticks at friends' homes, farmhouses and hill stations.

Step 4: Keep your home and society tick-free

The brown dog tick spends most of its life off the dog, hiding in cracks, corners and bedding. A tick-free home makes everything else easier.

  • Wash your dog's bedding and blankets in hot water every week during the monsoon.
  • Vacuum floor edges, under the sofa and around your dog's sleeping spot.
  • Fill small cracks in the walls near where your dog sleeps.
  • Treat every dog and cat in the house on the same schedule. Cats need cat-safe products only, made for cats.
  • In apartments, talk to neighbours with dogs. When every dog in the building is protected, ticks have nowhere to breed.

Step 5: Keep the coat easy to check

Thick and long coats hide ticks well. In the Chennai study, hairy breeds made up about 61% of the dogs with ticks, and Spitz dogs topped the list.

  • Brush long coats a few times a week. It shows ticks early.
  • Ask your groomer for a neat summer trim around the ears, paws and underside.
  • Don't shave double-coated breeds like Huskies or German Shepherds. Their coat protects them from heat. A trim is enough.

Mistakes that let ticks back in

Most tick problems come from a few common slips:

  1. Stopping protection in winter. Ticks are fewer, not gone.
  2. Giving doses late. Even a short gap gives ticks time to bite and spread infection.
  3. Putting a spot-on on the fur, or just before a bath. It needs to reach the skin and stay there.
  4. Doubling up on the same ingredient. Using a fipronil spot-on, a fipronil spray and a fipronil shampoo in the same week adds risk, not protection. Ask your vet before combining products.
  5. Treating only one pet. One untreated dog or cat keeps ticks alive in the house.
  6. Relying on shampoo or neem baths alone. They wash ticks off on bath day but don't protect after.
  7. Using livestock tick liquids or powders at home. Diluted cattle dips, propoxur powders and ivermectin poured on the neck can poison dogs. A Kerala study also found brown dog ticks resistant to deltamethrin, a chemical common in cattle tick products.

Is there a vaccine for tick fever in dogs?

No. There's no vaccine for tick fever in dogs in India. The only way to protect your dog is to stop tick bites in the first place. That's why the routine above matters so much.

If your dog ever shows fever, dullness, loss of appetite or pale gums, see your vet. Read more about the symptoms of tick fever in dogs.

What about puppies and older dogs?

Puppies need products made and approved for their age and weight. Many tick products have a minimum age, and some last a shorter time in young puppies. Ask your vet before the first dose.

Older dogs and dogs with health conditions can usually stay protected, but check with your vet which option suits them best.

Frequently asked questions

The questions Indian pet parents ask us most about tick prevention.

What's the worst month for ticks in India? +
Ticks peak during the monsoon, roughly June to November depending on your city, with another rise in summer. They're still around in winter, so protection should continue all year.
What's the safest tick prevention for dogs? +
The safest option is a product made for dogs, matched to your dog's weight and age, and given exactly as the label says. Ask your vet if your dog is a puppy, pregnant or has health problems.
Why does my dog always get ticks? +
Usually because of gaps in protection, ticks living in the house, or contact with untreated dogs. Check that every pet is protected on time and that your dog's bedding and sleeping area are clean.
What can I give my dog to stop ticks? +
A tick tablet made for dogs, given on schedule, protects from the inside. A monthly spot-on is another option. Your vet can help you choose.
Can indoor dogs get ticks? +
Yes. Brown dog ticks live inside homes, and dogs pick them up on short walks, in lifts, at groomers and from visitors' pets.
How can I avoid ticks on dogs naturally? +
Daily checks, regular brushing, clean bedding and avoiding stray dog resting spots all help. But natural methods alone won't protect your dog, and some home remedies like garlic and essential oils can be harmful.
Do I need tick protection if I don't see any ticks? +
Yes. By the time you see ticks, they've often already laid eggs in your home. Prevention works best before the problem starts.

Avoiding ticks isn't about doing more. It's about doing the same simple things every week, all year: one main product on time, a two-minute daily check, and a clean home. Find the right protection for your dog on our tick treatment for dogs page.
